Looking after your skin in your 30s

You may not notice any fine lines and wrinkles in your 30s but it is best to start on an anti-aging routine before they appear. This means your 30s is the perfect time to add those into your skincare routine.

What you might notice

There may well not be much difference in your skin between your 20s and your 30s, especially if you have stuck to a good skincare routine. But beneath the surface some of the fat stores will have reduced, making your face look slightly less rounded and leaner. Collagen and elastin fibres begin to break down, and there is a reduction of the number of melanocytes produced.

In your 30s you might notice your skin tone becomes sallower and duller as your cells regenerate less quickly. Fine lines, particularly around the eyes may appear towards the end of your 30s.

Keep an eye out for rosacea at this age. It can be wrongly diagnosed as adult acne but with rosacea, the redness and flushing will come and go especially when you eat spicy foods or drink warm beverages. If you think you may have rosacea, speak to your doctor.

Key skincare elements for this decade: Alpha Hydroxy Acid

‘AHA’ helps boost collagen production, reduces fine lines, speeds up cell turnover and makes your complexion look brighter. It may also help to reduce signs of ageing. Look for AHA in your exfoliator along with in your leave-on treatments like moisturisers and serums.

Best product for this decade: Eye Cream

If you haven’t already, it’s time to add an eye cream to your daily routine. The thin skin around your eyes is the first to show signs of ageing and can become dry.

Top tips for your 30s

Remember your neck. Your neck is second only to the eyes when it comes to showing signs of ageing. Whatever products you use on your face, also use them on your neck and chest (cleansers, moisturisers, sunscreen etc.). We are what we eat and healthy skin can come from the inside out. Eat lots of different coloured fruit and vegetables, carotenoids are responsible for giving fruit and vegetables their vivid colours, and they give our skin a bright, healthy colour as well. Finally, exercise also brightens your complexion by increasing circulation and creating a healthy glow.
